Genesis 1:26-28

Mar 02, 2023

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”

27 So God created man
in his own image;
he created him in the image of God;
he created them male and female.

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26-28 CSB

  • What does this teach us about God?

    • God exists in community (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)
    • God created human beings, male and female, to be His image bearers.
    • God blessed and gave male and female authority to extend His kingdom on earth.
  • What does this teach us about people/ourselves?

    • Our identity, purpose, and sense of belonging come from God.
    • We are our truest selves when we are like God, reflecting his character.
    • Jesus died so our identity as image bearers could be restored. Apart from Him, we cannot reflect God’s image on the earth. This is a work of the Spirit in and through us.
  • By God's grace, how will you obey?

    • Trust God for salvation (save me from sin and the consequence of eternal separation from Him) and sanctification (making me more like Him)
    • Seek God for wisdom about how to lead and serve where He has placed me.
    • Seek to imitate God in all areas of life.

Prayer: Father, we are weak when it comes to loving and living like Jesus. Strengthen us by your Spirit to reflect your image and extend your Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. Amen.
