Psalm 16:1-11

Confidence in the Lord

1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.


2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have nothing good besides you.”


3 As for the holy people who are in the land,
they are the noble ones.
All my delight is in them.


4 The sorrows of those who take another god
for themselves will multiply;
I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood,
and I will not speak their names with my lips.


5 Lord, you are my portion
and my cup of blessing;
you hold my future.


6 The boundary lines have fallen for me
in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.


7 I will bless the Lord who counsels me—
even at night when my thoughts trouble me.


8 I always let the Lord guide me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.


9 Therefore my heart is glad
and my whole being rejoices;
my body also rests securely.


10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol;
you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.


11 You reveal the path of life to me;
in your presence is abundant joy;
at your right hand are eternal pleasures.

  • What does this teach us about God?

    • God is our protector (v1)
    • God is good (v2)
    • God is our sustainer (v5)
    • God sets boundaries for us (v6)
    • God si our counselor (v7)
    • God is our guide (v8)
    • God is faithful (v10)
    • God provides a way for us (v11)
    • God is our source of job (v11)
    • God is eternal (v11)

  • What does this teach us about people/ourselves?

    • We cannot save ourselves (v1)
    • We possess nothing greater than God (v2)
    • When we choose God we are seen as "holy", "noble", and God delights in us (v3)
    • When we reject God we will experience sorrow (v4)
    • We are sustained by God (v5)
    • We have parameters/boundaries in which we should live (v6)
    • We we experience mental struggles (v7)
    • We will experience unfavorable circumstances (v8)
    • We can find rest in God (v9)
    • When we choose God we will spend eternity with Him (v10)
    • We can experience every joy and pleasure in our life when we have confidence in the Lord (v11)

  • By God's grace, how will you obey?

    • When our circumstances are unfavorable, take refuge in God's word.
    • When we struggle mentally, turn to God.
    • When we struggle physically, turn to God.
    • When we struggle spiritually, turn to God.
    • Do not replace God, who is faithful to sustain us through all things, with something (anything) else that will fail to sustain us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for being our provider, our protector, our sustainer, our source of joy, and our hope for life eternal. We thank you for seeing us in our struggles. In the past we have chosen things other than you to sustain us through trying times. We ask that you forgive us for choosing things other than you meet our needs, things that have failed us time and time again. Forgive us for choosing to live outside of the pleasant boundaries you have set up for us. We acknowledge that you are good. We acknowledge that you know what is best for us. We pray that by Your Spirit You would enable us to walk in the ways you have revealed to us through your word. We pray that we would always seek you first. In Jesus name, Amen.
